2024 has been an incredible yet challenging year for Koda Moss. As the sole founder and operator, I’ve faced some of my biggest achievements and toughest obstacles. I wanted to take this moment to reflect on what Koda Moss accomplished, where we fell short, and what exciting changes lie ahead in 2025.
What Koda Moss Accomplished in 2024
February 2024 - MasterChef Season 16, Episode 33 (Adriano Zumbo)
This year started with a highlight: supplying moss to set dresser Jenna Dafter for a MasterChef Australia episode featuring Adriano Zumbo. Jenna used live fern moss to create a vibrant, undulating moss mound decorated with colourful flowers, used to display the macarons in the episode’s challenge. This opportunity was a great showcase of how live moss can elevate creative projects.
March 2024 - Mother Ocean - Althaus Landscape Designs & MIFGS
One of Koda Moss’s biggest achievements this year was sponsoring Althaus Landscape Designs’ Mother Ocean display at MIFGS 2024. The centrepiece was a massive moss wave that pushed the boundaries of what live moss can achieve, especially in peak summer conditions. Constructing the wave was challenging, requiring innovative methods to secure moss to a rebar structure, often upside down. Despite the heat and risks, the moss thrived until the final days of the show. This project garnered national attention, featuring on TV, radio, and in garden magazines. It was an incredible learning experience and a testament to what’s possible with patience and creativity.
April 2024 – The North Face X Incu Retail Display
Koda Moss collaborated with Space Between and Boom Studios to design and construct moss displays for The North Face x Incu’s boutique fashion retail collaboration. This project involved sourcing and working with preserved moss to create two large merchandise display structures. After designing and crafting the displays, I travelled to Sydney for the installation. This project was a blend of creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork, and it was an honour to be part of such a unique collaboration.
June 2024
Quality Business Awards: Best Garden Centre in the City of Banyule
Koda Moss was honoured to receive the Quality Business Award for Best Garden Centre in the City of Banyule. This recognition celebrates the dedication to sustainability, creativity, and quality that has always been at the heart of Koda Moss. It’s a true reflection of the support and passion from customers, collaborators, and the community.
Thank you to everybody for engaging with my website, instagram, facebook and google profile—this is the kind of stuff that makes recognition like this possible for us!
Where Koda Moss Fell Short...
While 2024 brought professional milestones, I have to acknowledge where Koda Moss fell short. This year was quieter than usual in terms of communication, content, and accessibility for customers. I take full responsibility for this and understand the frustration it may have caused.
Due to personal challenges and environmental limitations, stock availability was reactive rather than proactive. As a small, single-person business, I’ve done my best to honour my commitment to sustainable foraging practices. This means limiting my growth, wholesale orders, spacing out foraging locations, and declining sales inquiries that posed a risk to moss survival or regeneration.
To those I turned away, I hope you understand it was a decision made with care for the environment. For designers, set dressers, and photographers, I often rented live moss instead of selling it outright to ensure it could later be rehomed with terrarists who could keep it thriving.
What’s Coming in 2025?
I’m excited to announce some big changes and plans for the year ahead, including:
- Drop-Based Business Model: Moving to exclusive moss drops, allowing me to source sustainably and offer unique finds.
- Preserved Moss: Expanding availability of preserved moss for open-air terrariums, event decor, and creative displays.
- Accessories and Merchandise: Introducing nature-inspired gear and products, from apparel to foraging tools.
- Adventure-Themed Content: Sharing my foraging adventures and connecting with followers through storytelling.
- Collaborations: Continuing to partner with designers, photographers, and brands to showcase the versatility of moss.
- Product Catalogue Redesign: Making it easier for customers to explore what Koda Moss has to offer.
- Packaging Upgrades: Enhancing sustainability and presentation.
- Social Media and Blogging: Recommitting to regular updates and insights to inspire and inform our community.
Please bear with me as I wait out the toughest parts of summer for foraging live moss. I’ll be posting stock updates as they become available and am always here to answer urgent inquiries.
